The Detroit Riverfront is filled with rich history, from the first Native American settlements to the roar of automotive industry today. A recent study by the University of Arkansas found that children who were taken on educational field trips performed better in school and on standardized testing than their cohorts who were not taken on field trips. Take your students’ learning out of the classroom and on the water with Diamond Jack field trips for an enriching and fun experience!

The educational tours by Diamond Jacks offer a unique experience to see the riverfront. The educational tour sites include the following: Renaissance Center, Bell Isle, U.S. Coast Guard Stations, Ambassador Bridge, Fort Wayne, J.W. Westcott II Floating Post Office, TCF Arena, the cities of Detroit and Windsor and much more.

Featured Tour Site: Hiram Walker Distillery

Established in 1858, the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor, Ontario is considered the largest distillery in North America. Although the founder, Hiram Walker, was an American citizen who lived in Detroit, he bought land across the river because it was cheaper in Canada. Walker started off as a grocery clerk, then slowly built his fortune in the whiskey distillery business.

The Civil War boosted the new distillery’s business. Demand for foreign whiskey soared because most American distilleries were caught up in the middle of the war. Legend has it that Walker built a “smuggling pipeline” underneath the distillery to smuggle jugs of whiskey into Detroit during the Civil War.

Hiram Walker Distillery still produces 180,000 liters of alcohol every 24 hours, five days a week. One of the most iconic brands to come out of the distillery is Canadian Club Whiskey.

You can see the sprawling complex along the Detroit River on Diamond Jack’s Detroit Riverfront tour from our Rivard Plaza dock. The Hiram Walker Distillery is just one of dozens of sites you’ll get to see from our boats. Book your preferred tour in advance! Make it a Diamond Jack day!
