Featured Tour Site: Fort Malden
One of the best reasons to take a Diamond Jack River Tour is that you will be exposed to historic sites that you might not have known about. Dating from 1795, Fort Malden is a Canadian National Historic Landmark that you will see on the 3:30 p.m. Wyandotte tour.
Fort Malden, formally known as Fort Amherstburg, was built in 1795 by the British to protect Canada (which was then a British colony) from the newly freed Americans. The fort also played a pivotal role in the War of 1812 and was briefly occupied by the Americans during the war. Many fugitive African-American slaves also made their escapes to freedom after being ferried across the Detroit River to Fort Malden. In the last act of the historical era, the fort served as a mental asylum.
From your perch on your Diamond Jack boat, you can see musket and cannon firings and reenactors dressed as 18th century soldiers. Should you want to explore the Fort more after your cruise, the Fort welcomes visitors May through October and offers free tours. You can even sample food that a British soldier would have eaten in the 1800s in the Soldier’s Cookhouse!
Let’s get ready to have fun this summer, Diamond Jack family! All aboard Detroit!
